Blue light glasses: do you need them for screen work?

Eight hours on a laptop, then more on your phone. Here is what blue light lenses can and can't do for tired eyes.

White frame glasses with clear lenses

Dry eyes, a dull headache by 4 pm and trouble sleeping. If that sounds like your weekday, you are not alone. Most office workers now spend more than seven hours a day looking at screens.

What blue light lenses do

Screens give off a lot of blue light. Blue light filter lenses reduce part of it. Many people say their eyes feel calmer and that they fall asleep more easily after evening screen time.

What they can't do alone

Eye strain also comes from blinking less, sitting too close and staring for too long without a break. Lenses help, but good habits help just as much.

  • Follow 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Keep your screen an arm's length away and slightly below eye level.
  • Blink on purpose. It sounds silly, but it keeps your eyes wet.
  • Turn on night mode on your phone after sunset.
Glasses are one part of the answer. The breaks you take are the other part. Dr. Neha Kapoor
When to see a doctor: If headaches or blurry vision continue for more than two weeks, book an eye test. You may need a new or first prescription.
